What does Grass Training for your Horse?

  • We’ve all encountered horses that suddenly become pushy when they see a juicy patch of grass, haven’t we?
  • What can we do when we don’t want to yank, pull or wiggle the lead rope?
  • How do we teach our horses to stop grazing without pulling or pushing our horses or tap them with a training stick?

It’s frustrating for our horse to get punished for eating a sweet little snack. Grazing is a natural behaviour, so therefor punishment doesn’t work for long. Yes, you can interrupt the grazing, but it doesn’t teach your horse to ignore grass. With grass training you listen to your horse (grass training is giving your horse what he wants, so you can get what you want) and you bond in grass training, instead of damaging the relationship you have! Stop being frustrated! How does that sound? Impossible? No, it isn’t.

Positive reinforcement is your Answer!

Why positive reinforcement (R+) help is effective.

For the simple reason that the horse gets what he desires!

When we use negative reinforcement (pressure/aversive – release/relieve) or punishment (the difference can be unclear for us, humans in this situation) horses often weigh out their options:

  • One bite of grass or more, and receiving an aversive ( negative punishment: grass is taken away/positive punishment: grazing is decreased by adding an aversive, negative reinforcement: aversive is added to increase desired behaviour: stop grazing)

We know that the grass is highly appetitive and the horse chooses grass….

That’s why all our previous ‘training’ failed. I put training between quotation marks because however the horses learned something (the aversive is worthwhile the grass) he has not learned what we want. Therefor we havent trained him! That’s where Grass Training will help you!

Why R+ Grass Training?

It works because the horse get what he wants: grass or high value treats! So whatever he chooses, it’s a WIN for him!
Only then, when he’s engaged and is willing to listen to us, we can change his behaviour and teach a Stop Grazing Cue.

Grass Training for your Horse

Once your horse is properly trained and make Grass Training Win-Win: win for him because he never gets aversives, he trusts you more (you don’t apply aversives AND you listen to him!, give him choice and control) and a win for you because you never receive aversives from your horse (being pushed over, feeling like a failure/incompetent horse trainer, no more stepping on your toes or being knocked over by his head, no more rope burns on your hands etc).
