Taming a Wild Horse, month 1

Here is the summary of what I’ve accomplished training Kyra with positive reinforcement.

I’ve kept a training journal and made photo’s and videos of all my accomplished goals (behaviours I trained) in the first two years. In 23 training sessions in the first 3 weeks I taught her a lot. Here’s what we’ve accomplished in 3 weeks of clicker training. From wild and unapproachable to:

  • Approachable in the stall as well as in the pasture
  • I can ty her without Kyra panicking
One of the first times I lifted Kyra’s hoof. Look at her tail and ears: this is still scary. She’s is offering her foot voluntarily, though

  • I can clean almost all feet
Leading over the premises goes well
  • I dewormed her with an oral dewormer
  • I could disinfect her wound (on her front leg) with disinfectant (spray can, no water)
  • I can lead her calmly and safely over the premises
  • I can brush her manen and tail (by hand)
  • I can touch her all over (!), even her belly, under her tail, and ears

  • Leading her through a gate safely. Leading her out of a stall safely without her jumping through the gate or door opening or her running straight our gate.
  • Started with yielding her hind quarters so she won’t be running away
  • She’s interacting and seeking contact with all humans!

Kyra turned from wild into seeking out to humans due to R+

3 Ways to get more clicker training

  1. Hee,

    Groetjes,
    Leonie (LeonieL@bokt)
